The Chemistry Convocation was a special event for the Denmark Group.
Senior graduate student Blake Ocampo wins the prestigious ACS Presidential P3 Medal for Graduate Research Excellence. Congratulations Blake!
Undergraduate Shangheng Zhong receives the R. C. Fuson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research and the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry. Shangheng will be staying on as a postbaccalaureate and will apply to graduate programs in the fall. Congratulations Shangheng!
Undergraduate Zijian Chen completes his Bachelor’s Thesis and will be enrolling in the University of Chicago Master’s Program this fall. Good luck Zijian!
Blake Ocampo successfully defends his PhD thesis and will be staying on as a postdoc while searching for a postdoctoral position in academia or industry.

The Denmark Group welcomes a new undergraduate Ronna Li. Welcome Ronna!
Scott participated in the annual Eschenmoser Lectureship at his alma mater ETH-Zürich for full day of visits with faculty and students. Prof. John Sutherland (MRC, Cambridge) gave a brilliant lecture and homage to Albert. Dinner at the Rigiblik overlooking the city and the lake was breathtaking, entertaining, and featured the seasonal white asparagus.
Scott participated in the 9th Annual Denmark Organic Chemistry Retreat at his alma mater, MIT. An enjoyable and stimulating event as always, followed by a wonderful day with Rick Danheiser at Fenway Park (compliments of Rick and Ron Raines) to watch the Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers.
Nick Wade takes his Fuson Travel Award to the Heterocyclic Chemistry Gordon Research Symposium (graduate students only) and Conference. Nick was chosen to give a oral presentation at the Symposium and a “Poster Teaser” talk at the conference both which generated plenty of interest.
Group Administrative Assistant, Phoebe Chiang, successfully completes her 12-month probation and becomes a permanent member of the Denmark Group. Congratulations Phoebe!

Scott was honored as the inaugural “Angewandte Chemie Chair” at the Belgian Organic Synthesis Symposium (BOSS XIX) in Leuven. Traditionally this Chair presents four lectures on the first day of the conference, but wanting to set a new bar, Scott gave five, one-hour lectures propelled by the finest South Korean Ginseng extract! Dongchen Ouyang takes his Fuson Travel Award to the Stereochemistry Gordon Research Symposium (graduate students only) and Conference. Dongchen presented a poster on his research which garnered plenty of interest.
Nick Wade participated in the annual Graduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Division of Organic Chemistry (ACS) which took place at Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Nick presented a poster at the conference which featured Profs. David Sarlah and Erick Carreira as highlight speakers.
Dr. Matt Bock completes his legendary tenure in the Denmark Group and heads to Indianapolis, IN to join Eli Lilly’s Process Chemistry group focusing on the development of antibody-drug conjugates. Best of luck to Matt, we will miss you!
The semiannual Denmark Group Cleanup left the labs glimmering (for a day) and Michela Lupi received the White Glove Award for the cleanest lab (and among the most productive) over the past six months.
